Trio da Paz

Trio da Paz

(left to right) Trio da Paz is Duduka da Fonseca, Romero Lubambo and Nilson Matta.

Featuring three of Brazil's most in-demand musicians – Romero Lubambo (guitar), Nilson Matta (bass) and Duduka da Fonseca (drums) – Trio da Paz updates the infectious spirit of jazz-oriented Brazilian music with their harmonically adventurous interactions, daring improvisations and dazzling rhythms.

Formed in 1990, Trio da Paz has recorded and performed with Charlie Byrd, Herbie Mann, Lee Konitz, Kenny Barron and Nana Vasconcelos, among others. The trio has recorded five CDs: Brazil from the Inside, Black Orpheus, Partido Out, Cafe and Somewhere. Their third release, Partido Out, won the 2002 Jazz Journalists Association Award for “The Best Brazilian Jazz Album of the Year.”

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Romero Lubambo studied classical piano and music theory as a young boy. After playing his first notes on the guitar at 13, he devoted himself to that instrument, graduating from the Villa-Lobos School of Music as the top student of classical guitar. In 1985 he left Brazil for New York, where he worked for Astrud Gilberto for four years. Lubambo has since performed and recorded with many outstanding artists, among them Dianne Reeves, Michael Brecker, Grover Washington, Jr. and Kathleen Battle.

Nilson Matta has long been considered one of Brazil's best bass players, having studied with Sandrino Santoro, Brazil's premier classical bass player at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.  After completing his formal studies, he played with top Brazilian artists and, beginning in 1983, toured internationally, performing with Joe Henderson, Don Pullen, Yo-Yo Ma and Paul Winter, among others. Since 1997, Nilson has taught at the Bass Collective in New York City and at Montclair University in New Jersey.

The Grammy Award winning percussionist Duduka da Fonseca was born in Rio and began playing drums at 13. By 15, he was performing and recording with top Brazilian musicians. In 1975, Duduka moved to New York, where he established numerous groups, among them Brazilian Express, the New York Samba Band and the Brazilian Jazz All-Stars.

Duduka has recorded and performed with leading artists such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto, Herbie Mann, John Schofield and Tom Harrell, to name but a few.

From 1984 to 1999, Duduka was a member of the faculty at the Drummer's Collective in NYC, conducting workshops and private lessons. He has also conducted workshops in Europe, Asia and Brazil. He is the author of an instructional book and tape/CD, Brazilian Rhythms  for Drumset.

Deeply rooted in the sound and rhythms of Brazil, Trio da Paz will be joined by vocalist Maucha Adnet, vibesman Joe Locke and Harry Allen on sax to offer an authentic salute to the songs of the great Antonio Carlos Jobim.
