When John Terhune arrived at the April Volunteers Meeting, he probably did not expect to be feted in an ode, but so he was. In a graceful and witty poem, Volunteer Chairman Fran Rosenthal enumerated the many reasons everyone at Arizona Musicfest was grateful for John’s efforts during his successful years as Chairman. Fran concluded by giving John a gift certificate for Barnes & Noble: now that he was “only” Vice-Chairman, he’d have plenty of time to catch up on his reading! Here’s John’s note:
Thank you for your generous and thoughtful gift!
Andrea and I have had the wonderful fortune to have lived on three continents, visited many of the great cities and been to many of the finest opera houses and symphony halls. None of these experiences can compare to the pleasure we have gained through our association with Arizona Musicfest.
Never have we witnessed a more dedicated and focused effort of so many talented people on achieving the noble goal of developing music appreciation in young people and presenting fine music to the community.
I will always carry the wonderful memories of my time as Chairman. They were times of the highest highs and the lowest lows! Andre Watts, Dan Locklair, Elizabeth Bishop and Lynn Harrell were all examples of how accomplished Musicfest has become in meeting their objectives.
And, of course, the lowest of all lows was the death of Roberta, our beloved Roberta! Her death, however, gives us an unparalleled opportunity to expand our purpose by recognizing and rewarding youth who demonstrate exceptional talent.
We are truly blessed that we have the creative and powerful leadership of Jim Morrissey to lead us to the next level of excellence.
Thanks to all of you for the pleasure you have given us!
