This sparkling event begins with:
- Selections from Bernstein’s West Side Story. Thrilling!
And, it will end with a glittering presentation of:
- Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, starring pianist, Larry Loeber. Outstanding!
In between, will be two other fiery performances:
- Bates’ The B-Sides (a YouTube mega-hit, commissioned and premiered last year by Michael Tilson Thomas)
- Widor’s Toccata for Organ, starring Jimmy Jones
“To authenticate the All-Star nature of our Orchestra, our violin section features four players who hold the title of Concertmaster at four other orchestras around the country. 4 Concertmasters in 1 section make for Firework Performances!” ~ Robert Moody
Premium Seating available in the orange areas of the seating chart below.

Rhapsody In Blue by George Gershwin What is the old saying? “As American as Apple Pie?” The Viennese have their Strauss Waltzes…the Hungarians have their Liszt Rhapsodies. We have the ever fresh, exciting Rhapsody In Blue by George Gershwin. It is jazzy! It is exciting! And how about that opening Clarinet opening slide? It is called a Glissando. The Rhapsody is so familiar that we can “hear” the syncopated theme and the brilliant piano solo parts the moment the piece is mentioned. It was written in 1924 for a competition concert named “Experiments in Modern Music: What is American Music?” What an experiment it turned out to be! Be at our Orchestral Fireworks concert on Friday, the 26th of February for a “no holds barred” performance of the Rhapsody by pianist Larry Loeber and our Arizona Musicfest All-Star Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Moody!
The B-Sides: Five Pieces for Orchestra & Electronics by Mason Bates Five pieces: five diverse scenes. Electronica fused with the classical orchestra. This is a trip that takes us to new worlds of musical composition. It compels us to stay a while and be part of an extraordinary voyage of sound and vibrant rhythms. This work is definitely an “A Side”.
