Dozens of families enjoyed a delightful springtime tradition with live music and a picnic lunch on Sunday, April 25, 2010, when Arizona Musicfest presented the second annual Free Family Concert, A Rockin’ Picnic in the Park!, at Desert Camp Community Center.
The kids danced and played games on the grass to the sounds of the Ponga Boys Band, rockin’ Mom and Dad’s favorites mixed in with some of the latest songs.
Picnicking on the ‘great lawn’ was a breeze because there was plenty of room for twirling, tossing balls, and playing maracas, while accommodating blankets, lawn chairs, coolers and sun canopies. A variety of food was available for sale, thanks to Grimaldi’s pizza, Krispy Kreme Donuts, lunch bags from Whole Foods, and The Herb Box’s signature chips. All the proceeds were donated to Musicfest Minutes.
Musicfest Minutes is the daily music education program of Arizona Musicfest, in five school districts: Cave Creek Unified School District, Scottsdale Unified School District, Paradise Valley School District, Deer Valley Unified School District, and Phoenix School District 1. With additional support, the program can be expanded to more schools throughout the Valley.
There was a lot going on that breezy, sunny day! Fabulous gift certificates from Market Street restaurants (Heirloom, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse, Eddie V’s, and Armitage) were raffled off to lucky winners who will soon be dining lavishly at first class establishments.
Barnes & Noble Desert Ridge offered an assortment of books and CD’s of note for sale. Desert Foothills Community Education hosted a booth with information on popular summer arts residencies, classes and camps, including Summer Music Camp. Arizona Musicfest offers scholarships for students in need to attend Summer Music Camp.
In addition to the concert, the kids got to choose their favorite activities, writing stories and creating artwork in the clubhouse, continuing the afternoon’s theme of fun, creativity, and learning. For a unique treat, they visited the “Instrument Petting Zoo” where musicians shared their musical instruments, up close.
The parking lot filled up quickly, so picnickers were happy to use the free shuttle bus provided by American Valet running between DC Market Street and the community center.
