In April 2006, Robert Moody began his tenure as Artistic Director. His inaugural season at the Musicfest 2007 set new records for attendance and ticket revenue.
Since September 2005, Moody has also served as Music Director of the Winston-Salem Symphony Orchestra. In May, 2007, he was named Music Director of the Portland (Maine) Symphony Orchestra; during the 2007-2008 season, he will serve as Music Director Designate with that ensemble.
The 2005-2006 season marked the end of a tremendously successful eight-year post with The Phoenix Symphony, where Moody had served as Associate, then Resident Conductor. His casual manner and ability to speak with ease from the podium helped novices and enthusiasts alike gain a greater appreciation for orchestral music. During his tenure, Moody founded the highly-regarded Phoenix Symphony Chorus and served as its Chorusmaster. For six years, he was Music Director of The Phoenix Symphony Guild Youth Orchestra.
Maestro Moody is a frequent guest conductor with orchestras across the United States. This season marks his eighth year leading the Oklahoma City Philharmonic’s Discovery concert series. Other recent and upcoming guest conducting appearances include debuts with the Seattle, Grant Park (Chicago), Ravinia Festival, Kitchner-Waterloo (Canada), El Paso, Lubbock, Anchorage, as well as return engagements with the Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Ft. Worth, Tucson, and Annapolis Symphonies. In addition, he was named Resident Conductor for the 2007 season at the Eastern Music Festival, where he will work with gifted young musicians from across America as part of EMF’s nationally recognized summer program.
Robert Moody made his Carnegie Hall conducting debut in 1999, the same summer he stepped in to conduct at the Santa Fe Opera, filling in to international acclaim for the company’s ailing director, John Crosby. His tutelage under the direction of conductor Michael Tilson Thomas with the New World and San Francisco symphonies was chronologued in the May 2002 issue of Symphony Magazine.
A native of South Carolina, Robert Moody earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Furman University in his hometown of Greenville. He completed a master’s degree from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where he studied conducting with Donald Neuen. Mr. Moody has held conducting posts with the Evansville Philharmonic, New York City’s InterSchool Orchestras, Brevard Music Center, National Repertory Orchestra, and Santa Fe Opera.
