Since 1993, the Arizona Musicfest Young Artists Concert has provided local young stars the opportunity to display their musicianship to a live and appreciative audience. These kids bring down the house year after year with the sophistication of their programs. This is a most-professionally rehearsed and produced concert. In honor of two of our founding benefactors, we have named the concert the Dil and Louise Dilatush Young Artists Concert.
Young Artists Concert 2008 The 16th annual concert is scheduled for November 16, 2008 at 3:00 pm at the Pinnacle Presbyterian Church Chapel. Details to come, please check back.
Young Artists Concert 2007 The 15th annual concert on November 11th offered a wonderful representation of the orchestral sections. Once again, the Chapel of Pinnacle Presbyterian Church was filled with an audience eager to hear some of the best young artists in the valley. They were not disappointed!
The String Quartet of the Southwest – Michael Shu & Jessica Smith, violins; Carolyn Synder, viola; and Alexander Oharriz-Martinez, cello – performed an artful and cohesive Beethoven Quartet.
Noah Dugan, trumpet, and Tyler Richardson, piccolo trumpet, played Arutunian and Torelli clearly and with pure tones.
Pianist Elmer Fan pleased the audience with a polished Scriabin Sonata and Chaz Salazar, flute, offered a sweetly expressive Poulenc Sonata. Cailtin Poupard, clarinet, concluded the program with a technically difficult and beautifully performed Rossini work.
The performances received sustained applause and the artists were enthusiastically greeted by audience members at a post-concert reception that featured welcome refreshments served by the Cactus Shadows High School Band Boosters.
As in past years, this performance was taped by the KBAQ Production Studio. Individual performances will be featured in the coming yeaer on Sunday evenings at 8 p.m. after “From the Top.”
The Young Artists Concert continues to provide a valuable performance opportunity for young musicians from all over the Valley of the Sun, and to build bridges among music teachers, studios, Arizona State University and valley orchestras.

Arizona Musicfest presented the 14th Annual Young Artists Concert on November 12, 2006, at 3:00 pm in the Chapel at Pinnacle Presbyterian Church. A record crowd heard some of the Valley’s top teen performers in a program that included music by Chopin, Debussy, Vivaldi, Saraste, Ravel, Liszt and Faure.
Concert chairman Sandi Haag profiled the event: “This year, we showcased the 2006 winners of Arizona Musicfest’s Young Musicians Competition. In addition, we welcomed several gifted performers new to the Young Artists Concert.
“Winning medalists from the Competition solo divisions included Mia Laity (violin), Ilina Mitra (piano), and Roman Rojas (piano). Also featured was the ensemble division winner, Topaz String Quartet, comprised of Loren Stallcop and Thalia Coombs, violins; Garrett McDaniel, viola; and Ruth Wenger, cello.
“Returning for the second year was clarinetist Caitlin Poupard; appearing for the first time were trumpeters Jessica Waithe and Tyler Richardson; and flutist Chaz Salazar.”
The fine talents provided exciting, polished performances and a delighted crowd responded in kind with applause and cheers. Following the concert, audience members and performers mingled over refreshments.
Young Artists Concert 2005 The 2005 Young Artists Concert was held on Sunday, November 13, in an exciting new venue, the Chapel at Pinnacle Presbyterian Church.
Each year, Arizona Musicfest brings to the NE Valley, gifted and young musicians to the thrill and surprise of audience’s ears. This year’s artistically superb concert featured a varied program that included fine performances by Albert Chiu, pianist, who favored us with wonderful Mendelssohn and Ginastera selections. Accomplished clarinetist Caitlin Poupard played a spirited Rondo from Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A Major. Josephine Yang, pianist, blended a selection of beautifully played short pieces from Bach, Beethoven, Chopin and Ginastera.
Arizona Musicfest Young Musicians Competition winners were also featured. Amy Wang, violin, Second Division winner, offered intricate pieces by Weiniawski and Paganini. Third Division winner Kristen Whitworth, piano, charmed the audience with Chopin and Mozart. And from the Ensemble Division, the trio of Nicholas Villalobos, double bass, Diana Tsen, violin and Cassie Nguyen, piano, aptly concluded the program with Bach and Beethoven.
All the featured Young Artists are highly accomplished and are music competition winners many times over. Our audiences are always rewarded by attending their performances and are pleased to meet and share refreshments with the musicians at the conclusion of the concert.
One attendee this past year stated, “I never expected such quality and maturity in these teen performances. These musicians are obviously destined for excellent futures in performance if they choose to do so. I will not miss another event like this ever again!”
Both co-winners of the Ensemble Division, who wowed the judges with their spirited performances, played. The Villalobos-Tsen-Nguyen Trio, is comprised of Nick Villalobos (double bass), Diana Tsen (violin) and Cassie Nguyen (piano). The Jeon-Han-Song Trio, consists of Suzie Jeon (piano), Booyeon Han (violin) and Hyon Song (cello).
If you missed the concert, you can still hear these wonderful musicians!
Margaret Morgan and the fine KBAQ production studio team regularly tape concerts by the Valley’s talented young artists, including performances by musicians at Arizona Musicfest’s Young Artists Concerts. These performances air on KBAQ (89.5 FM) on Sunday evenings at 8 pm, following From The Top.
